A. Some of the major categories are anthropology, cognitive science, linguistics, psychology, and sociology. If we understand humans, we can predict their actions (with making laws and such). We can also better our world to make it the most comfortable and most efficient to live in

Q. I'm trying to write an essay for the question 'In social sciences are we trying to measure the immeasurable?' So I am just wondering if the social sciences and human sciences are the same thing? I also have to use ONE of the social sciences to illustrate my point. Does anyone know how many social sciences there are and/ or what the different ones are? Thank You!

A. Human science includes but is not limited to the social sciences and humanities, including history, sociology, anthropoloy and economics. It is about the investigation of human life and human activities using a rational systematic and verifiable method - observation and use of the senses. Human science is not the same as human activities, science means "knowledge." Be careful, heated arguments break out between scientists in laboratories and socila scientists. The study of classics, languages, literature, music, philosophy, history, religion and the visual and performing arts are referred to as the humanities.

What does Social Sciences mean in College?
Q. I am applying for college and I have to take a Social Sciences Elective, but the course book doesn't describe what Social Sciences means. Anyone wanna help me out?
Asked by babble - Tue Nov 13 15:36:40 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is part of the general education requirements. Social sciences means you would need to take one course from one of several disciplines: psychology, sociology, political science, economics (sometimes), anthropology, geography. There's usually quite an array of courses, so I'm sure you will find one you like. Psychology is usually the most popular.

What is an associate in liberal arts - Behavioral and Social Sciences degree good for?
Q. I am finishing up my prerequistites at a community college on the way to earn my bachelors in nursing. My counselor informed me that i would be able to get an associate in liberal arts-behavioral and social sciences before i transfer. i was just wondering what is it good for? How can you use it?

A. I don't see much use for it except as a degree in its own right. But since you'll be transfering into nursing, focus on that goal as the scope is much higher.

Is Social Sciences a requirement to become a psychologist?
Q. I was checking out some of the courses offered at a local college, and under pre-university programs they had Social Sciences. It states that it'll prepare you for anthropology, psychology, etcetc. It says you'd recieve a degree in Social Sciences. I'm wondering if this is a requirement to further my education, or if its a waste of two years.
Asked by Jase G - Mon Oct 5 11:42:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are starting your college education at a two-year college and it does not offer a psychology major, social sciences is ok, but it would be better to major in psychology if it is available. At the four-year college, you should major in psychology. Then, after you have earned your bachelor's degree, you will need to spend about five years in graduate school to earn a Ph.D. or Psy.D.

Q. I'm a sophomore and i get to choose 2-3 courses for junior year and about 3-4 courses for senior year. I am just for advice on what classes do i start taking now in high school that might make me better as i am studying in college for social sciences.
Asked by fashionqueen_05 - Mon Mar 1 17:28:36 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What I realized after high school was that if you're good at English and Math, all other courses are a lot easier. For example, in history, geography, etc, you need to be able to write good essays and understand the reading assigned to you, having good English skills will help. If you want to do good in science courses like chemistry and physics, strong math skills will help. So pick those two, and then fill the rest.

Are sociology and the social sciences closely related or not even close?
Q. I am researching a graduate program called "MA in Social Sciences" and I'm interested in a PhD in Sociology later on. Do you think I can get into a PhD in Sociology program with an MA in Social Sciences or not?
Asked by ~Bree~ - Mon Sep 14 13:12:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes because sociology is a social science and many elements of sociology cross over with other social science subjects such as psychology, history and research methods etc albeit people tend to be either good at sociology or psychology and not necessarily them both.

Can I use Average Life expectancy as an example of a Normal Curve in nature or social sciences?
Q. I have to come up with an example from nature or social sciences for my Quantitative Methods class that would follow a Normal Curve. Would average life expectancy be an example of this? I am thinking it would be because it is the average age that the majority of people live to be. Some fall below the average and some will live beyond the average. I am going by the average for my state which is 75.1 years. What about average American woman's shoe size? I can't use height because we used that as an example in class and my professor said we can't use any example from class or from the text.
Asked by justme - Tue Feb 17 10:22:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Expected age is not normally distributed. Imagine a normal curve with an average at about 72 years. You will have a cluster of people who die at about 72 years, but the data is funny as you move down the tails. As you move through the ages of 25 to 55 the death rate is almost steady. This would clearly not be normal in this region. Also, no body lives over some age like 120 (I think). The data goes to zero out past that point which is also not normal. Now... this said... you could claim that death rates are approx. normal and this may be true... but I wouldn't try it if I were you. Another problem is that you say you want to use average life expectancy. This does not really have a distribution like you are looking for. This is… [cont.]

Best Universities to major in Social Sciences?
Q. What are some good Universities (preferably in the North around IL) where one can major in things such as psychology, psychiatry, neurology, etc? Or more in general; social sciences and things related to the brain/mind.
Asked by Tray-C - Sun Sep 27 20:27:54 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Psychology is an undergraduate major. Psychiatry and neurology are medical specialties which are studied in residencies after the completion of medical school and an internship. For a career in psychology, you need to go on for a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in it. The best universities in northern Illinois are the U of Chicago and Northwestern U. The U of Wisconsin at Madison is about two hours from Chicago and is probably a bit easier for admission than NW or Chicago. Good luck.

(if not, look it up). maybe math just isn't your strong point. hope this answer helped!

Is the name Social Sciences a proper one?
Q. Why should one insist that Social knowledge has to be Scientific? science is based on the knowledge of causal connection, and strictly speaking, there is no scientificity in Social Sciences. Are we still suffering from the 19th Century European euphoria of Science? Are we still in the line of Auguste Comte looking out for the possibility of a Social Physics?
Asked by Dr. Girishkumar TS - Sun Oct 7 13:05:46 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most do not insist. The term social sciences is a catch all phrase (an issue of nomenclature, if you will) for many of the academic disciplines that involve the social aspects of the arts and sciences. To be sure, there are scientific disciplines within social science. For instance, social network analysis is a mathematical science and a normal science the same way calculus or physics are a normal sciences. There exists an agreed upon set of precepts and innovations within the discipline and most contributions build on the most recent, thus are linear. However, social network analysis, or other scientific sub-disciplines such as quantitative statistics or bio-statistics are often housed within departments that are not, as a whole,… [cont.]
