What was the impact of independence on the economy and society of North America?
Q. social and economic issues, issues of continuity and change, adjustment and new perspectives about economic development and impact of different social groups- Native Americans and African Americans
Asked by Chibi - Mon Aug 18 18:29:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The new nation was now free to trade with any other nation of its choosing. It no longer had to obey the laws passed by Parliament and the mercantile system. However, the new nation also lost the protection on the high seas of the British Navy. The American merchant marine soon developed into a profitable commercial venture and many foreign sailors would even "jump ship" and join the American vessels. The west was open to development but the new nation had to provide its own protection for its citizens. The Northwest Ordinance and similar pieces of legislation would help the nation add states on an equal footing with the original 13. America was free to enact protective tariffs and encourage its own industry.

Does this speech from Dr. Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America give you hope?
Q. Dr. Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America, was the first Muslim leader to address the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial. During the closing session of December convention, she spoke passionately about the upcoming dialogue program between ISNA mosques and Union synagogues, the role of religion in America, antisemitism and Islamophobia. Please read this and then tell me your thoughts on what she said: Shalom. :) I would prefer that you read it all rather than risk someone thinking I try to take things out of context in interpreting her words. If you don't have time to read it now, perhaps you can bookmark it for later.

Q. How did the Columbian Exchange effect society's in Europe and North America?...?
Asked by caselogicc - Fri Oct 10 18:18:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Columbian Exchange brought luxury items such as coffee and tobacco to Europe. It also brought potatoes which were nutritionally exceptional for the Europeans. Potatoes boosted the population and led to the inflation of food prices. The importation of gold and other precious medals further stimulated this inflation, which was felt throughout Europe. On the North American side, there were the obvious outbreaks of diseases of which the Natives had no immunity to. The horses and weapons that were brought made the natives increasingly violent. Hope I could help.

Are there any societies in North America that are not driven by the love of money and the need to rush!,rush!!?
Q. Communisim only works on paper, It is now looking like the same is true for capitalism. What areas of America is not driven by the love of money and the need to get the workers to work more and more with less people? I suppose our jobs are going to China because those people are forced to work for much less that the people in other countries. Are the Amish the only society that is not driven by the love of money? Are Canada, Mexico, Central and South America also driven by the need to buy stuff on credit and by the love of money. It seems we are expected to buy things on credit to keep the economy going. What is wrong with that picture? In order to protect my family, exactly what can I do to prepare us for the bird flu pandemic in North America?
Q. What supplies should we have? And how much for a family of 10? Should we be prepared to quarantine ourselves for at least 3 to 6 months once the Avian Flu is in our area of the US? And with police and other law enforcement agencies looking out for their own families and quarantining themselves, too, won't we have to be in a position to protect ourselves and our families from those that could try to do us harm because they are desparate to provide for their own… [cont.]

A. Curing this flu is no easy matter, avian influenza is so deadly that it is right behind anthrax on the bio-defense list, as a possible terrorist weapon. There are two ways to try to dodge the flu. One is to kill all infected birds. The other is to develop a vaccine before the disease shifts. Because this strain requires four times the usual vaccine dosage it is impossible to produce the 600 million doses our population needs. Current supplies could provide vaccine for 15 million people; that s only 5% of our population. Accumulated data paints such a frightening pathogenic picture that WHO issued an urgent warning that a flu pandemic could affect billions of people worldwide. Billions because, unlike our annual flu outbreaks, everyone is… [cont.]

What if Europeans never came in contact with Native Americans, in both North and South America?
Q. How do you think the societies and/or cultures of North and South America would have turned out if Europeans never took the initiative to explore new lands, and somehow found a way to fully support themselves economically and control over-population? Would both Europeans and Native Americans have progressed or developed differently? What's your take on this?

Has anyone ever heard of the North America Scholar Consortium (NASC)?
Q. apparently it's a "reputable" honors society, but I never heard of it. My son got "invited". Should he pay the $65 for membership or no way?

A. no, these are scams. colleges don't care. they only care about grades, test scores, school clubs and community involvement, essays, and letters of rec.
