What hospital has the best reputation for delivering babies?
Q. I am 19 weeks pregnant and trying to figure out who will deliver my baby. I reside in Shiloh, IL so Memorial Hospital would be closer. I work in Hazelwood, so Barnes would be closer and plus Children's Hospital is next door just in case something went wrong. I am so undecided-please give me some suggestions or even tell me how to do research on the internet to see which hospital is the best.

A. I know that Barnes used to be a very good hospital, but I do not feel like it is a good hospital anymore at all. I would suggest St Clare. It is a new hospital, the hospital is very pretty, the staff is wonderful. I would recommend looking into going there.

Hospital Volunteer Work; what work do I do and is their something suitable for a medical hopeful?
Q. I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have been thinking about volunteering at the Royal Melbourne Hospital but I wasn't sure. What work can I do there and can I play a role which will give me a better understanding of the career path of a doctor. I'm an undergraduate hoping for graduate entry into medicine at the Uni of Melbourne and was wondering whether there were any pre-med options available at any hospitals in Melbourne. Any information would be great.

A. I don't know how things work there but any volunteer in a hospital would help you. Here we have volunteers who pass out mail, pass out newspapers, etc. Maybe you can volunteer to read to a sick patient or volunteer to play games with the kids..any thing you do will look good on the app..you will still be in the med field

What qualifies an animal to make hospital visits?
Q. I'd like to get my very lovable cat to make hospital visits to a local hospital in my area, but I don't know what's required of an animal to make such a visit. For example, would my/a cat have to declawed to visit? Does it depend on the hospital? Or is it a general code in most hospitals? I'd like to get my very lovable cat to make hospital (a hospital for humans, mind you) visits to a local hospital in my area, but I don't know what's required of an animal to make such a visit. A. You will need to check at the hopital about whether or not they allow pets on the premises. Some wards will not allow but others might. You will not be able to take a cat into a ward with pregnant women or under 1's for example, due to the risk of toxoplasmosis. Many hospitals allow people to bring in pets for terminally ill children to stroke, (as it's proven to be therapeutic). The cat will not need to be declawed. However your cat must be cleared for fleas, worms, etc. Also the cat must be controlled at all times. Please don't listen to Andrew. You simply can not just waltz into any hospital with a cat, (or any other animal for that matter)! There are simply too many health related problems associated with pets to allow that to happen.… [cont.]

How many people die in an average hospital in one day?
Q. I am going to be volunteering on Saturday nights in the ER at a fairly large hospital. For any ER doctors/nurses or hospital administrators, on *average*, how many people would you say die in a normal ER at one hospital in a single day? How about in the entire hospital (including failed operations and just really sick people)? I guess I just want to know what to expect - are there really several people dying every day (like on TV), or is it more like a handful of people every week?

A. I worked at a large hospital in Texas and we rarely had people dying daily. Most of the ones that died were older people with terminal diseases. There were many weekends that there were no deaths in the ER.

Which is better for Registered Nurse, veteran hospital or to join the military?
Q. Which is better for Registered Nurse, veteran hospital or to join the military? Hi, my husband is RN and he wants to join the military but I don t want him to join. So, I am trying to allure him into working for the VA hospital. What are the pros and cons of working at veteran hospital for RN s? I sound like a bad wife but I really just want him to be in safer environment and I don t want us to be separated.

A. www.usajobs.com has job listings for the VA Hospitals. It's kinda strange that they list the salary range for every VA position except nurses, however the ones that I know here at the VA in Fayetteville, Arkansas while not saying a dollar amount do say they get excellent pay. In considering a VA job I would shy away from the ones in the big cities , but then I come from a town so small both city limit signs are on the same pole , so I am prejudiced toward the rural life. Also, a traffic jam is 2 pickup trucks behind a farm tractor on a gravel road.

What is the typical length of a hospital stay when being tested for Crohn's disease?
Q. My boyfriend was put in the hospital on Thursday, and he says the doctors want to test him for Crohn's disease. The thing is though, it doesnt seem like their really doing anything. He says they want him to stay there till the gastroenterologist sees him and does tests, but he hasnt seen the gastroeinterolist yet, and basically he's just sitting there in the hospital WAITING. He also doesnt even feel sick at all anymore, hasnt since yesterday. How long does it typically take to be tested for Crohn's disease, and how long should he be in the hospital for?

A. It depends on the doctor. The hospital cannot do anything without the doctor. The tests themselves are often done on an out patient basis. They maybe trying to regulate his diet in the hospital.

How important is it to register for the hospital?
Q. I'm having problems registering for the hospital because I dont have my actual insurance card yet and I'm practically ready to pop already. The hospital said they can run my insurance info when I get there to deliver but everyone keeps asking me if I registered for the hospital already... is it really that important to do so?

A. Honestly it makes things go so much smoother for you and/or your partner when you go in to the hospital. Imagine worse case scenario you get to the hospital contraction after contraction your 10 CM's dilated. Do you want to risk any issues because they need your medical history, allergies, etc before they can help you. I know my hospital has a 3 page form that I filled out at home and then mailed into the hospital. The day I go in all they will need to do is take a copy of my insurance card which can be done anytime before I leave the hospital. Find out if your hospital does preregistration the same way.

What should happen if a hospital or doctor refuses to treat a dying person?
Q. If a person has no money or insurance but is clearly dying, and the nurses, doctors, and hospital refuses to treat the person, and the patient dies, should these people (1) lose their licenses and (2) be charged with homicide, or negligence (3) should the hospital lose its funding. Or should we consider a doctor or hospital like any other business? Should hospitals and doctors follow the "we're here to make money and you need to pay to get service" attitude? This is what happened at M.L.K. hospital in Los Angeles. Isn't medicine primarily about saving lives? What do you think?

A. I personally think the hospital nurses should be sued in court if they do not treat a person in the ER. Especially if they clean up around the person. But, of course, that's just me.

How to obtain hospital records in Nevada after a family member has died?
Q. We have been told that we can not have my grandmother's hospital records and would need to go through probate court to get them. Is this true in the state of Nevada? What if we have a POA? Do we still need to go through probate court or should those records be made available to us.
Asked by CARRIE C - Mon Nov 17 12:27:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes you will need to go through the probate court and get Letters Testamentary. The POA you have no longer works - its only good for so long as grandma was alive. If you already have a probate open, then the letters should already have been issued to the executor of the estate. If you have not already opened a probate, you need to do so.

There is a yahoogroup for women who were or already had a hysterectomy and they were sooo helpful. They were so sweet and gave out alot of tips. I had two grapefruit size fibroids and then they said that there were smaller ones. What was really cool tho, my doctor took a pics of them for me. Everyday after surgery you get better and better. I didn't go back to work for 10 weeks. So don't go back too soon. Hospital food hasn't changed much. It's bland the first day. After that I loved the pudding, and popsicles. My insurance isn't the best, so I'm sure I am going to have a lot of money invested in this. I have read that most people are in the hospital for 2 nights. Will there be anyway I will only have to stay for one night? If I am doing fine, will I have this option?

A. I had an abdomial hysterectomy 13 months ago. I was there for 3 days, but it was because they were afraid that I was going into pneumonia. I tend to breathe shallow. It is so nice not having your period anymore. Now… [cont.]

How does a hospital determines the cost for a particular product/service?

A. They overcharge for everything. Most hospitals have an agreement with the big insurance companies to take a huge discount. I've had bills that my insurance company wrote of almost half the bill.

What is the legal definition for hospital confinement as opposed to urgent or emergency room services?
Q. I have known of people who have spent up to 48 hours in the emergency room, some due to "observation" and insurance did not pay because it says it has to be a "hospital confinement". What is the legal definition of hospital confinement?

A. I cannot comment on your example above without seeing an actual claim. However, typically, any thing over 23 hours 59 minutes should be considered as in patient in most insurance companies. The hospital would bill as such. Now this does not include if you sat in the ER waiting room for 10 hours before being seen. The time would start from the time you began receiving treatment. Obviously the hospital can admit someone at any time before that as in patient.

where can a hospital buy lowfat good quality dessets?
Q. I would like to find a vendor that would sell already prepared low fat desserts for an upscale hospital floor. Price really isn't an issue.

A. If you were going to buy in bulk which im assuming you would as its for a hospital you could go to a local bakery, pastry store, caterer etc and becasue youd want many and youd be re-ordering all the time theyd be happy to make them for you on a regualr basis.you would just need to tell them what sort of thing you want or they could find some recipes for you.
