How does check verification work at retail stores?
Q. My checkbook was recently stolen and before I could close my account, dozens of checks were written. I am in the process of clearing up this mess, but in the meantime my old checking account is frozen, overdrawn, and closed to further activity. I was able to open a new account after I explained the problem, even though ChexSystems had me in their system as having a ton of bounced checks. Will I be able to write checks to stores that use check verification systems? Or, even though I have a new account number at a different bank, will they cross-reference my name/driver's license number/phone number and not take my checks? BTW, I don't use a debit card for two reasons: (1) most banks in my area still charge a monthly fee just to put a… [cont.]

A. It scans the account number for previous reports of problems . Your new account should be OK , but checks are so antiquated . I'm down to maybe 6 a year , Why are you writing them ? Unless it is some very small business ( like Our water company ) that cannot process credit or debit , Skip using checks , they are more dangerous and totally cumbersome . Use your debit card , and NEVER put your PIN number on it .

A. Contact MODOR and report a lost or stolen check. You should have received it within one or two days of its being mailed.

How should I expect my tax advance check this month?
Q. I always have my tax money go into my checking account. However, this year my 1st check was deposited in my account and about 4wks later I received a paper check which turned out to be my 2nd check. I still don't know WHY my 2nd check was a paper check... How will my tax advance for May arrive? Deposit or check? Thanks.

A. Well, it's really complicated!! How did you have your taxes done and how did you pay your fee's!! If you went through H&R Block or Turbo Tax and opted for your fee's to be taken out of your refund, then you will be getting a paper check in the mail!! It sounds like you did a Rapid Anticipation Loan and sometimes you can only get an UP TO amount up front with the remaining on a paper check to follow!! That may explain your 1st and 2nd!! But as far as the rebate...it seems that you'll be getting a Paper Check!! Hope this helped :)

I'm wanting to transfer funds from a checking account at one bank to a checking account at another. I want to write a check deposit it. Who do I make the check out to? Myself? The bank? Cash? The problem is, one account only has about $4, and the other account is at about $-3.86, and I have to transfer money on my lunch hour, so I don't get popped for overdraft fees. That's why I just wanted to go to one bank, deposit a check and be done, instead of driving all over. But thanks all! I'll just make it out to myself.

A. You can make it out to either yourself or cash, but not to the bank. The name on the check just must match the name on the depositing account.

Who is liable for cashing a check that is third party endorsement prohibited and has a stop payment?
Q. We issued a check to an employee, who then called and said he did not receive it. We then placed a Stop Payment on it and re-issued a check. Now in normal circumstances, in California, we would be responsible, but since all of our checks state on the check that "Third Party Endorsement is Prohibited"that we would no longer be responsible. Am I wrong? If so what wording can we put on our checks to protect ourselves?

A. if you put a stop on it no one can cash it. no matter what you have written on it, as long as the stop is on it, its not cash able. but a stop on a check only lasts 6 mos. so if your worried about the check you need to put the stop back on it every six months. if you want to not have to honor the check. where your check is imprinted with the third party warning, under it imprint not valid after 30 or 60 days and the check won't be cashed after that date. if the bank cashes a check that has a stop on it, it's their fault not yours and you can't be charged for that. the bank would have to give you the money back.

How do I check my credit score without signing up service?
Q. I have checked my credit score in the past, however, it required me to sign up for some service, check my score, then call and cancel afterward. Is there a way to avoid this process and just check it for free without the hassle of having to cancel a service? Of course I never had to pay money to do it, but it is still a pain to have to call and cancel.

A. Yes there is! If you are in the USA you are entitled to a free credit report once a year. According to the Federal Trade Commission: "You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order your report from each of the companies one at a time. The law allows you to order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months." I had the same case exactly a few months ago. What to check for when buying a laptop secondhand?
Q. I am planning on buying a laptop that was advertised on a local classifieds site, and am going around to have a look at it tomorrow. It's out warranty, so I'm trying to be a bit cautious and am wondering what I should check for when looking at it? I have a vague list so far, such as checking that all the keyboard keys work, that the hard drive's the right size and for scratches (that'll show whether the owner took care of it or not), but am looking for more suggestions?

A. Check to see how long the thing runs on just the battery, people always are trying to sell laptops with dead batteries. Also check to make sure the bios passwords are unlocked if it's a dell laptop. If they are, they will need to unlock them else you won't be able to work on the laptop if it's needed. Check the screen out for dead pixals, they are easy to fix but you could lower the price some with some haggling if you see them (you can fix with a ball point pen with a paper towel on the end and tap the pixal softly and it will go away). They look like pink spots on the screen. Check for any cracks near the hinge, make sure the hinge holds the screen up solidly. Check for any cracks in the case. Stick a cd in the cdrom drive to see if it… [cont.]

By this, validity check can be realized automatically if data type is set as data value or E-mail. With RAQ Report, you can set the input data type of cell easily in the General tab. 2. Writing validity check expression for a cell. Input validity check expression, and realize validity check manually. For example, input the validity check expression ${C5}>=0 && ${C5}<=100 into the cell to ensure that the data value is between 1 and 100. You can write validity check expression for a cell in the Validation tab. Moreever, if the input value is null,… [cont.]

What to check on/under your car after crossing flooded roads?
Q. It is always better not to pass along flooded roads but sometimes we don't have a choice. My car has been crossing floods for two weeks already, water is as high as a quarter of my tire height. What parts of my wheel assembly should I check or put oil on? Any particular area to be checked for rust or oil leak?
Asked by doc m - Thu Oct 4 03:01:37 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would not worry too much about the tires and wheels. I would keep an eye on the belts and cooling fan... a belt can be thrown off by shear water pressure let alone some debree floating up in to it. if the fan is belt driven, it can act as a propeller on a boat and the fan blades can bend under the water pressure and damage the radiator if they come in contact with it.

A. You can't know for sure. In fact, the bank may accept it and then, later, determine it's not valid. Your best bet is to, as you've done, contact the school. If you have no reason to receive a check from UCLA, then I'd be suspicious.

How do I check the credit worthiness of rental applicants?
Q. I am considering renting a house I own but I have never done it before. I know that I want to check references of applicants but how can I check their credit report, etc? Are there any Web sites or other references that might help me get started with this process? Thanks.

A. Contact the three credit reporting bureaus and open up an account with them (there is a nominal fee for this). You then have to get a signed permission form from the applicant allowing you to access their credit information. You submit this to the credit reporting bureaus - plus a fee that you can pass on to the applicant - and they send out the credit reports for the applicant. It's then up to you to decipher the reports and decide whether this person is credit worthy. If you've never done this before, I would recommend you hire a property management company to secure your tenants. Some charge an upfront fee to market the property and find the tenant. You then have some minimum term (90 days, 6 months, etc.) where they get about 8% of… [cont.]

what is the difference between a Stimulus Check and a tax rebate check?
Q. Or what exactly is a Stimulus Check ? Is it just a new word for rebate check, that you get when you file your tax return? And what is going on with these checks? Why are they late, so as to make so many news stories lately?
Asked by Berenstein - Mon Jun 30 17:11:03 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Stimulus check is basically an advance on your rebate for next years rebate. The tax rebate you recieved this year is from your 2007 taxes. The stimulus check is an advance on what they think you will get back for next years taxes. If your rebate next year ends up being less than what you got for your stimulus check you will not owe anything.

How do I check to see if my alternator, AC condensor and power steering pump are working good?
Q. Okay I am rebuilding a 1965 Mustang, I pulled the alternatore, ac condensor and power steering pump off, but how do i actually check them to make sure they work, the car has been sitting since 1985, and cranking the engine up and checking it that will not work, any ideas? Also how hard is it to rebuild these items if they are bad?

A. sometimes easier and cheaper just to replace. the a/c compressor that you took off will be have to be refilled with r12 (which is pricey as hell) or retrofitted with r134a (which is also pricey as hell), the p/s pump, well just run it and see if it works and if it leaks, and the alternator you can take to just about any autoparts store and they can check it for free.
