Cake is a form of food, typically a sweet, baked dessert. Cakes normally contain a combination of flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or oil, with some varieties also requiring liquid (typically milk or water) and leavening agents (such as yeast or baking powder). Flavorful ingredients like fruit purées, nuts or extracts are often added, and numerous substitutions for the primary ingredients are possible. Cakes are often filled with fruit preserves or dessert sauces (like pastry cream), iced with buttercream or other icings, and decorated with marzipan, piped borders or candied fruit.

Cake is often the dessert of choice for meals at ceremonial occasions, particularly weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. There are countless cake recipes; some are bread-like, some rich and elaborate and many are centuries old. Cake making is no longer a complicated procedure; while at one time considerable labor went into cake making (particularly the whisking of egg foams), baking equipment and directions have been simplified that even the most amateur cook may bake a cake.

How do you eat a cake with dowels in it?
Q. We are making a wedding cake for my sister, we have never made a tier cake before and i have been reading up on it. I know you have to put wooden dowels into the cake to stabilize it. This is probably really stupid but how do you eat the cake with the wooden dowels in it? Do you show the cake off while it's together, then separate them, take the dowels out then cut it? Cut around the dowels? What do you do?

A. Once you are ready to cut the cake and serve you take the layers apart, remove the dowels, cut and serve.

A. It depends on the frosting. If it has any dairy product in it yes you should put it in the fridge. If it is just dusted with sugar or any other dry ingredient it would not be necessary. Depending on the weather where you are located if it is cold outside - less than 40 degree F you could put it in the garage.

Should A cake with butter or egg white-based frosting be refrigerated?
Q. I've heard that refrigeration can make a cake go stale quickly, but I also know from experience that cakes w/ frosting made from butter and/or egg whites can separate and go bad if left at room-temperature. I don't want to use any margarine or vegetable shortening in my recipes, so if the frosting is made with butter, cream cheese, and/or egg whites, should the cake be refrigerated? Thanks!

A. I leave my butter based frosted cakes out at room temp because the butter doesn't go bad quickly - I also keep my butter dish out from breakfast time to dinner without trouble. I would refrigerate any cream cheese and/or egg white based frostings to keep them from spoiling and/or separating.
