What are some specific examples of sudden rises or falls in agricultural commodity prices?
Q. This is for an economics assignment. Looking for some specific examples of sudden rises or falls in any agricultural commodities. This could be due to political unrest, or adverse weather conditions or a natural disaster, etc. Something along those lines which would cause a rapid change in prices. Thank you in advance.

A. Right now the crops have suffered greatly in America's midwest due to the flooding earlier from summer and spring. This increases the price of corn/livestock feed/biofuel (from corn) which in turn rises the cost of pork/beef/anything else that is raised out there. I would focus on that because it affects the whole world, we are (US) the 2nd largest pork exporter in the world. If this country's prices increase so does everyones. So while fertilizer companies, anti fungucide companies, insecticide companies may make out because of increased need for their product. Demand for the corn would be at an all time high and thus the price goes up.

A. It's too long to explain here how each major differs from the others. U should see your counsellor and find out what your aptitudes are: what subjects do you learn easily? What things do you like to do? Ideally, you and your counsellor will find a subject area that you reallyl like, do well (have an aptitude for), and that's in demand in the labor market. For example, if you like mathematics and computers, and like solving problems, then maybe computer programming's for you. On the other hand, if you love animals, then perhaps agricultural studies are what you should go into. Whatever field it is, it should be one that (a) you can do really, really well, (b) you love to do, and would even do it for free if you didn't have to make a living, [cont.]

Has anybody studied deminshing returns of co2 in the atmosphere?
Q. I know from my study of agriculture and economics (my degree is in agricultural economics) that any variable input results in diminishing returns when input is added at a higher and higher level. Has anyone studied atmospheric co2 in this manner? In agriculture, which is a natural science, if any variable (such as water or nitrogen) results in diminishing returns when added at higher and higher levels. I have received the same results in econometric models when variables are added when building econometric models. My hypothesis is that increasing levels of atmospheric co2 will result in global cooling not global warming. Any comments? Any research in this area?

A. The point you make about diminishing returns is correct but increasing greenhouse gas levels won't lead to global cooling, instead any increase will lead to increased global warming on a scale tending to zero. However, long before the zero point was reached we'd have all died from asphyxiation. The three gases nitrogen, oxygen and argon account a little over 99.9% of the atmosphere, these do not contribute to global warming. Carbon dioxide and all other GHGs make up about 0.05% of the atmosphere so there's massive potential for increasing the levels of GHGs. There's also massive potential for increasing the amount of gas in the atmosphere - this would just lead to an expansion of the atmosphere further into space and higher pressures.… [cont.]

Do you think the reason Napoleon considered England a "nation of shop-keepers" is down to economics?
Q. England and France have similar populations (probably quite close in the early 19th century too) but France has twice the area. Also, France has a far higher % of her GDP dedicated to agricultural goods. As a result, if you think about it, large markets which draw in people from a huge area (largely devoid of shops) are more likely to be popular in France; and shops which produce tertiary (manufactured) products, and which can depend on their densely-populated surroundings, are more likely to occur in England. Right?

Question abaut the economics?
Q. 1. How do price floors in agriculture set by the federal government change equilibrium prices and quantities? 2. Do you think agricultural price floors are good for the economy? Why? 3. How can Priceline.com offer prices on hotels and airline tickets that are 40% and 50% below the retail prices? 4. If you were a producer would you prefer to operate under perfect competition or some other product market? 5. Why might a firm continue to produce at a loss in the short run instead of shutting down? Can you give an example of this practice?

A. Greedy, aren't you. Five completely unrelated questions as one. I'll give you an answer only to #4. In spite of claims to be in favor of competition, every business prefers that while its vendors and suppliers be under perfect competition the business itself has a monopoly. This makes sense. Wouldn't you prefer to have high profits while paying the least possible for everything you have to buy? So my question is why did you even have to ask this question? Isn't the answer obvious if you just think about it?

Micro or Macro Economics for Engineering Student?!?
Q. I need to know which economics i should take. I know nothing about economics. I am almost a junior in college about to transfer to the University of Georgia for Agricultural Engineering. I am not planning on opening my own business one day and I am planning to get a masters in Agricultural engineering, not business. I am good at math, but I am sick of it if you get my drift, so I am pretty much looking for the one that I can sail through easily and lazily, cause up until now I have had my share of nerve racking classes and they're only going to get worse at UGA.

A. Take Macro as a general intro to the field. As an engineer, this will actually come quite naturally for you. You can always take micro, if interested, later. But get the macro concepts first.
