Aaron McGruder (born May 29, 1974) is an American cartoonist best known for writing and drawing The Boondocks, a Universal Press Syndicate comic strip about two young African American brothers from inner-city Chicago now living with their grandfather in a sedate suburb. Through the leftist Huey (named after Huey P. Newton) and his younger brother Riley, a young wanna-be gangsta, the strip explores issues involving African American culture and American politics. The articles about it are all kind of vague on the subject, but presumably he's going to talk about politics from a liberal point of view, and about black culture (usually to be critical of it) just like he did in his Boondocks comic strip. If you mean "why" from his perspective, the answer is probably "money" (the tickets aren't cheap) but it's also useful to have a soapbox from which to espouse his views. As previously noted, McGruder is concentrating on his Adult Swim TV cartoon. He has also said, in a talk late last month at a college in Florida, that he got sick of doing the daily newspaper comic strip. He said it was Bush, Bush, Bush all the time, and we already get it that Bush is stupid. But McGruder had been on "hiatus" from doing the daily strip since the spring, for a scheduled six month break. (The strips running the meantime were reruns, as you may have noticed.) He was apparently tired and stressed out from doing the strip daily. Universal Press Syndicate got anxious as early as September whether he was going to resume as scheduled in late November '06.
